BeDNA: Our eDNA Solution

Environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling is a powerful technique for monitoring biodiversity through the analysis of DNA molecules shed by organisms into aquatic environments.

BeDNA is an autonomous eDNA sampler designed for multi-species surveillance, with long-term sample preservation capabilities in a variety of structures and platforms. At sea, eDNA sampling is commonly utilized to study fish populations, detect invasive species, and monitor marine mammals, even in deep or remote waters. Buoy-based eDNA systems facilitate remote sample collection, allowing for continuous sampling without human intervention. Near the shore, land-based eDNA sampling aids in the detection of invasive species and the assessment of coastal biodiversity.

Both our buoy-based and land-based eDNA solutions operate on the same principle. The system pumps a predefined amount of fresh or salt water through a sampling filter and collects suspended solids. Samples are grouped in user-friendly sampling units which can be swapped by non-technical personnel. The number of sampling units is scalable to meet project specifications. After sampling, the filters are air-dried and treated with a DNA-stabilizing chemical. Isolation valves and sequential flushing ensures reliable sampling and prevents cross contamination between samples. The system has a clean water input port for control samples if cross contamination or biofouling control is desired. This results in a robust system that can operate autonomously for an extended period, providing consistent samples in the harshest environments.
